The Twelve Days of Christmas: Final Thoughts (Social Media Edition).

Getting into Professor Kane’s Social Media and Digital Business class this semester was a complete and total accident for me! A fluke in my schedule opened up a void that had to be filled with something and that something by random chance ended up being this class. I had absolutely no idea what I had gotten myself into. This is very unlike me! I am the type of  student who thoroughly researches the professor, the syllabus, the course, and get multiple both online and personal reviews from past students before jointing a class, but not this class. No, this class was a total accident, and what a wonderful accident it has been.

This accident ended up not only being my absolute favorite class this semester, but also one of my favorite classes I have ever taken during my time at BC.

Okay , so I am a hopeless sucker for Christmas!

yay-christmas

Now, since we are busy college and MBA students prepping for finals in December in the midst of the holiday season, we do not get a lot of build up for Christmas; therefore, I am always looking for an excuse to incorporate Christmas into my daily activities. I thought I would hit some of the highlights that really struck me throughout this semester ( the good, the bad, and the ugly)  to the tune of…

THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

…Here goes nothing…

The Good:

ON THE 1ST DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY SM & DB CLASS TAUGHT ME…

That social media is an incredible tool in harnessing the power of collective intelligence. From both the readings the week our class discussed collective intelligence and the lecture given my NYU Professor Natalia Levina, we learn about the wisdom of crowds and how social media and digital business has provided a platform that truly takes advantage of all the wonderful benefits that come this dynamic and interconnected community. Most of us are familiar with the  expression “two heads are better than one”. Well what about 1,ooo heads, 1,000,000 heads, or even 1,000,000,000 heads. Social media and digital business has allowed us to harness power from crowds that was previously impossible to collect in one place..

ON THE 2ND DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY SM & DB CLASS TAUGHT ME…

About the incredible power of creative destruction through social media and digital business. Initially, this idea sounded like an oxymoron of sorts. How can something create and destroy simultaneously? I wasn’t really grasping what was mean by creative destruction in the scope of the class. Little did I know that creative destruction was at my finger tips at the push of a button every time I called an Uber. Amazon, Air BnB, and Uber are all digital business platforms that have disrupted massive and seemingly stable industries. They have not only  changed the game, but have completely rewritten the rules! I was fascinated to continue to discuss examples of creative destruction weekly through our twitter feed, where examples of creative destruction were always prevalent.

ON THE 3RD DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY SM & DB CLASS TAUGHT ME…

The power of alliances in social media and digital business. My first real blog post of the semester was of an unlikely alliance between two of my favorite companies, Bobbie Brown  Cosmetics and Uber. Two very different companies, two very different industries, but somehow they came together through social media and digital business, forged a brilliant and strategic alliance, and executed spectacularly.  This is is just one of many examples we discussed throughout the semester. I found it fascinating how technology and social media acts as bridge/common link to fuse two very separate industries together. Just recently I got an email about another alliance, Uber and Amex. The alliance was centered around using an Amex card ( finance industry) in conjunction with Uber ( transportation industry)  to help college students keep the promise “I’ll be home for Christmas, you can count on me”, offering them up to $65 in credit for an Uber ride from the airport to home.

Who knows what other alliance are yet to come, but I am always intrigued with the strategy being them.

ON THE 4TH DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY SM & DB CLASS TAUGHT ME…

That one of the greatest thing that social media and digital business does is constantly  challenge EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING! It challenges the way we think, the way we intreat with one another, the way society operates as a whole, the way consumption and economics are understood, the way our legal system operates, ect..

The point here is that social media and digital business are consantly challenging because they are constantly changing. It seems is one gets distracted for even a hot second they are slapped across the face with something challenging the status quo of 3 seconds ago. Before  this class I was oblivious to the challeneges that social media and digital business were presenting and the changes that came about from those challenges.

ON THE 5TH DAY FO CHRISTMAS MY  SM & DB CLASS TAUGH ME…

How empowering social media can be in terms of giving a voice to people. I think where I experienced this “power” the most during this class was throughout the election. Whether one was for Trump or for Hillary, social media platforms ( Facebook, Twitter, ect) gave you a voice if you wanted it.  However, political campaigns are not the only ones that empower people on social media. Campaigns surrounding topics such as the environment, beauty, regulation, feminism, health care, ect…are positioned online and then propelled forward through the voices of millions of social media users. It has facilitated people taking an active part in what they care about and having an opinion to share.

ON THE 6TH DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY SM & DB CLASS TAUGHT ME…

The impact that social media and tech giants are having on society and the business world. It seems like every time I open any news source Google invented this, or Amazon launch that , or Facebook created this, or Microsoft bought that, or Apple developed this. It seems that the giants of the tech industry are slowly but surely moving into every other industry. They are expanding beyond their traditional borders, platforms, and services and are targeting every opportunity to innovate. I was very intrigued by this expansion and will continue to keep a close eye on it after this class is over.

The Bad:

ON THE 7TH DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY SM & DB CLASS TAUGHT ME….

With great power comes great responsibility ( I think spider man may have taught me this first, but anyway…) the web defiantly has a dark side. As great as online commerce can be, the dark web is also a commerce platform for drugs, human trafficking, terrorist groups such as ISIS ect…And due to the intricacy of the dark web, it is almost impossible to track or prevent at the source. This is truly one of the greatest downsides of the web, which I was not fully aware of before this class. It is the kind of free reign which scares me; the kind no one can control or do anything about.

ON THE 8TH DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY SM & DB CLASS TAUGHT ME…

Social media has altered our communication with one another and not always for the better. Although  social media has defiantly made communication easier on a more extensive level, it has also defiantly dehumanized interactions. It is not all just “digital hugs” as we saw last week in our Ted Talk. People are actually reporting detritiation of  interpersonal skills due to their reliance an tech platforms to intreat with other people. When we were discussing this in class I found myself thinking about how much I like getting hand written letters form people and how I can’t remember the last time I got a hand written letter form someone; however, texts are taking over my phone storage space…

8.jpg

Also, online  communication  is often littered with misinformation, no matter how advance the filtering algorithms. We saw this controversy first hand with this years presidential election.

ON THE 9TH DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY SM & DB CLASS TAUGHT ME…

That one of the major consequence of an ever evolving digital world is the way that it is going to effect work. When we discussed the future of work in class we focused  two very different groups of people and how they would be effected, the Teds and the Bills of the world. Most everyone in this class would say that in the grand scope of things they are a Ted. The thing about Ted’s is that in great majority they prosper form technological advancement in the work place. However, Bills are afraid for their jobs and their lives. We as a society have to understand two very impotent things 1) Digital  business will continue to grow and advance; there is no stopping it. 2) We need to think long term and figure out how we are going to  prepare  the masses of workers which will be out of job due to new digital advancement and what their role will be in society.

The Ugly:

ON THE 10TH DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY SM & DB CLASS TAUGHT ME…

People can be vicious and social media just compounds that viciousness on a whole other level!! Just ask Justine. What started off as a stupid and distastful tweet, led to the destruction of her life. Was it wrong of her to post that tweet, yeah. Just goes  to show how important it is to think things through before you just slap anything online for the world to see. However, did she deserve everything that people threw at her as a consequence, no. She was trapped on airplane as the entire twitter world turned against her and tore her to shreds. People can be irrationally mean in defense of what they think is wrong. It is important to be aware of how crucial it is to think about what is posted and how such massive hatred can effect the lives of individuals .

ON THE 11TH DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY SM & DB CLASS TAUGHT ME…

Trolls are very real and they are out there. As horrible as it is, there are people who get great amount of pleasure by putting other people down. Again, digital platforms have only made this easier for people to do. We discussed this not only in class, but there was also a personal presentation about it. The consequences which come form mass trolling can often be intense. There needs to be a greater conversation around this online   harassment and a more purposeful attempt to prevent this from happening.

The End:

ON THE 12TH DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY SM & DB CLASS TAUGHT ME…

12.jpg

To be thankful for the happy accidents the universe sets up for us! Never in my life did I think I would take a class about Social Media and Digital Business. It is embarrassing to admit this now, but before I just didn’t see the point. Social media is just “shiny”. You know, supeefially attractive, that “oooooo, ahhhh” 2 second quality about it, but not much substance beyond that. How could one possible talk about it for a whole semester? There didn’t seem to be enough to say I though… oh, how wrong and deeply ignorant I was.

This class has transformed the way I view social media.  It was not until I was challenged by Professor Kane and this course to develop a more advanced understanding of both the   breadth and depth of social media and digital business that I truly  began to see the tremendous impact it has on our society and world.

I have really appreciated the structure of this course. I loved the twitter feed ( which says a lot becasue I am not a twitter fan) , blog posts, personal presentations, and just the overall genuine enthusiasm for the material form both the students and from Professor Kane. This is the only 2 hr and 20 min class I have ever had  in my life that has never felt long. t

I am leaving this class with more questions than I had going into it. I think this is speaks to the success of the course and the impact it has had on me becasue it has me constantly thinking.

Thank you Professor Kane and Happy Holidays to all and to all a good Christmas break!

  1. Great post! I loved how you set up this post up- super creative. I liked how you balanced the positive of social media with the negatives. I believe that this is a major takeaway from our Social Media class. While these platforms can lend themselves to positive things such as business development, communication across countries/states, and a voice to the people as mentioned in your post, they can also leads to negative aspects of society. Social media has allowed trolls to take its impact on bullying- and has allowed us to feel a sense of disconnect from the people around us. Overall- great post! I enjoyed reading it a lot.

  2. Love it! Very clever way to present your insights!

Fun way to frame your last blog! Great reminder to take the good aspects without forgetting the bad aspects of social media and digital business. I loved how emphasized its power to rewrite the rules like Uber and Airbnb have, but also kept in mind the impacts of it on personal relationships and the negativity that occurs on social media sites. I think I often get wrapped up in the big picture of what these sites and tools can do but forget about the person to person interactions that occur at its core. Overall -I loved reading this and I’m glad you got to take this class even if it was by accident!

Awesome final post! I love the unique way you structured your key highlights. I really like the way you balanced both social media and digital business’s pros and cons. Like you, before taking this class, I thought social media was very one-dimensional. My personal use was limited to personal entertainment and limited connection to peers. After taking this course, like you outlined in your post, we are now aware of social media’s many different facets. From collective intelligence to the creation of the sharing economy and even to the way we interact with our “friends” — social media has huge positive and negative impacts. I can’t wait to see what we do next with it.
